Getting Started

LabXpert Automation is an interfacing middleware that connects laboratory equipment to digital systems such as LIS, EMRs, and national surveillance systems. It supports a wide range of manufacturers and models, with new integrations added regularly.

This guide walks you through the steps to download the application, connect machines, and set up system integrations.

πŸ“¦ Downloading LabXpert Automation

To begin, download the latest version of LabXpert Automation for your operating system:

πŸ‘‰ Visit the Releases Page to download the installer for Windows or Linux.

Once downloaded, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

⚠️ Ensure the application is installed on a machine that has access to the network your lab equipment is connected to.

🧩 Registering Equipment

After installation, follow these steps to connect your lab machines:

  1. On the Home page, navigate to the Machines section and click the βž• Add button in the top-right corner.
  2. From the list of manufacturers, select the one that matches your device and click Next.
  3. You'll now see the list of models by that manufacturer. Select the appropriate model and click Next.
  4. Enter the serial number of the equipment and choose the connection method. Click Complete to finalize.

πŸ’‘ The serial number is typically located on a sticker at the back or underside of the machine.

After registering equipment, click the ❓ Help icon on the equipment detail page to see a detailed guide for how to configure the specific equipment, or find the appropriate guide under the Machines category in the documentation.

πŸ”Œ Common Connection Methods

  • Serial – RS232 port (e.g. COM1, COM3)
  • TCP as Client – the machine connects to the app
  • TCP as Server – the app connects to the machine
  • File – static file-based output (e.g. .txt, .hl7)
  • Folder – monitored directory for output/input
  • Database – direct database polling (for advanced setups)

πŸ”— Setting Up System Integrations

To send results to external systems such as LIS, EMR, or national reporting tools:

  1. Go to the Systems section in the sidebar.
  2. Click the βž• Add button and select your target system (e.g. ALIS, OpenMRS, DHIS2).
  3. Provide the system URL and connection details (e.g. API key, database credentials).
  4. Complete the setup and confirm connection status.

Once integrated, results from machines will be automatically routed to the external system according to your mapping settings.

🧠 See the Mapping Guide to ensure parameters are correctly aligned.

You're now ready to begin capturing and transmitting lab results with LabXpert Automation.
